Part 1

HAMA House – Living Room
We’re hooome!
Oh! Akuta-kun, Kiro-chan, welcome back!
…Thanks. What’re, you guys… watching? Is that… a boxing… match?
Yeah.
Would you two like to watch with us? We also have cookies.
Hell yeah we do! Thanks! Nothing like sharing snacks with your besties at the movies! Now all we need are some drinks!
I think, there’s some… in the, fridge. I’ll go, bring it, ov—
! Shhh.
?
“And there we have it, folks! A clean jab from the right and that’s a knockdown!!”
…Huh!? Are you fucking with me!? He totally could’ve avoided that!
Ooooooh, Boss is all hyped up.
Ahhhhhhh what the fuck, man, they’re heading into the interval1 now? That cornerman better come up with a good game plan or else…
? Cornerman…?
You guys never heard of a cornerman before? It’s the guy outside of the ring that helps the fighter out with stuff like physical care or coaching and shit.
They also make the decision to forfeit when the match gets dangerous, right? …I think it’s called throwing in the towel?
Yeah. It’s basically a dude that’s both the fighter’s partner and the one busting their ass out behind the scenes.
So what you’re saying is, they’re like a producer!? Does that mean there’s an Élan de Cornaline Award2 for best cornerman, too!?
As if. I told you, they bust their ass behind the scenes.
But… I guess there’s one dude that’s pretty well-known for a cornerman. They call him Conner Corner. That guy’s legit built different.
Built different how?
Normally, cornermen’re only supposed to work with their partner.
But whenever this dude got too into the game, his field of vision would broaden up and he’d end up helping the enemy… or heck, even the audience.
His field of vision, would broaden… up? Not, get smaller…?
Yeah. They say he’d fly to the stands to kill a mosquito if some guy in the audience was about to get bit. That dude was not human.
…That’s dope! Conner Corner’s the GOAT! I wish I had a buddy like that!
Yeah… he sounds, cool…!
(…It’s amazing how he can care for others like that. If only I could do that…)
HAMA Asunaro High School – Community Improvement Clubroom
Hey Kirokuuuu~, y’know, yesterday’s match got me thinking and I got a very nice idea to propose to you~
?
Kiroku, you wanna try being my cornerman?
…Huh?
A parody of the Elan d'or Awards, awards in the film-making industry of Japan. The original French meaning is 'golden momentum' and the in-game Japanese uses 'silver momentum' since silver can mean second place, a pun on cornerman, or alternatively, second (another name for cornerman). Since I decided to use cornerman instead of second in my translation, I opted for 'Cornaline' which means Carnelian in French and sounds like corner.
